산야의 약간 습기가 있는 곳에 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 원줄기는 둥글고 곧추 자라며, 높이 20~60cm, 가지가 갈라진다. 잎은 마주나고 원줄기를 감싸며 잎자루가 없다. 잎 모양은 난상 피침형 또는 긴 난형으로 길이 2~6cm, 폭 7~30mm, 잎 앞면에 검은 반점이 흩어져 있으며, 잎 가장자리는 밋밋하다. 꽃은 7~8월에 노란색으로 피는데, 취산꽃차례를 이루어 가지 끝에 많이 달린다. 꽃의 지름은 15~20mm이다. 꽃받침잎은 피침형의 타원형, 녹색이고, 꽃잎과 더불어 5장이다. 수술은 많고, 암술대는 3개이다. 열매는 삭과로 길이 5∼10mm, 난형이고 10월에 익는다. 우리나라 거의 전역에 나며 일본, 사할린에도 분포한다. 이 종에 비해 다북고추나물은 키가 작고 잎이 줄 모양 타원형이며 밑부분에서 뭉쳐나므로 구별된다. 어린잎을 나물로 먹으며 전초 말린 것을 약용한다.
