분류체계
제비꽃목 제비꽃과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 낮은 산 숲 가장자리나 들 또는 길 등의 해가 잘 비추는 곳에서 흔하게 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 뿌리는 여러 갈래이고 갈색이다. 땅 위로 곧추서서 자라는 줄기는 없다. 잎은 뿌리에서 모여나고 잎자루가 3~15cm로 길다. 잎몸은 피침형 또는 삼각상 피침형으로 털은 거의 없으며, 길이 3~8cm, 폭 1.0~2.5cm이고 아래쪽으로 흘러 잎자루 윗부분에서 날개처럼 되며, 가장자리에 톱니가 있다. 꽃은 4~5월에 짙은 자주색으로 피지만 드물게 흰 바탕에 자주색 줄이 있는 것도 있다. 꽃잎은 5장이며 양쪽으로 달리는 꽃잎 안쪽에 털이 있다. 꽃뿔은 둥글고 길이 5~7mm로 조금 긴 편이다. 열매는 넓은 타원형의 삭과이며 세모가 진다. 6~8월에 익는다. 우리나라에서 가장 흔하게 자라는 제비꽃인데, 자주색으로 피는 꽃, 옆으로 달리는 꽃잎에 털이 있고, 잎자루 위쪽에 날개가 있어 구분할 수 있다. 어린잎을 식용한다. 씨름꽃, 오랑캐꽃, 장수꽃, 병아리꽃, 옥녀제비꽃, 앉은뱅이꽃, 가락지꽃, 참제비꽃, 큰제비꽃이라고도 한다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 일본, 타이완, 중국, 시베리아 동부 등에 분포한다.
