분류체계
제비꽃목 박과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 민가 주변의 양지바른 곳에 관상용 또는 식용, 약용으로 식재하는 덩굴성 한해살이풀이다. 덩굴손은 다른 물체를 감고 올라가며, 잎과 마주난다. 잎은 어긋나며, 손바닥 모양으로 5~7갈래로 갈라지고 끝은 뾰족하며, 가장자리에는 톱니가 있다. 꽃은 7~8월에 암수한그루로 피며, 잎겨드랑이에 1개씩 달리고 노란색을 띤다. 꽃받침은 종 모양으로 5갈래이다. 꽃부리는 5갈래, 지름 2cm쯤이다. 수술 3개, 씨방은 3실이며, 암술대는 3개로 갈라진다. 열매는 박과로 타원형이며, 8~9월에 익는데 표면에 많은 돌기가 있다. 수박이나 수세미오이와는 다르게 덩굴손이 갈라지지 않으며, 열매의 표면에 혹 같은 돌기가 있고 노란색을 띠므로 구별된다. 관상용으로 식재하며, 열매는 식용, 종자는 약용으로 이용한다. 긴여주, 여지라고도 부른다. 열대 아시아 원산이며 우리나라 전역에서 재배한다.
