분류체계
북아메리카 원산으로 하천가, 논밭 둑, 마을 부근에 식재하는 낙엽 활엽 큰키나무이다. 줄기는 높이 30m, 지름 1m 정도로 자라며, 수형이 길게 위로 산장하여 원통형으로 된다. 나무껍질은 흑갈색이고, 햇가지에 능선이 있다. 잎은 삼각상 난형이며, 톱니가 있고, 밑부분에 2~3개의 꿀샘이 있다. 꽃은 3~4월에 꼬리모양꽃차례로 피며, 수꽃의 수술은 40~50개이다. 암술머리는 3~4갈래이다. 열매는 삭과이며, 5월에 익으며, 3~4개로 갈라진다. 우리나라 전역에서 식재하며, 북아메리카에 분포한다. 이 종은 수형이 길게 위로 신장하여 원통형인 점과 잎의 기부에 꿀샘이 있는 특징으로 유사종과 뚜렷이 구분된다. 가로수, 조림수로 심고, 목재는 건축재, 상자재 및 신탄재로 사용한다. 강선뽀뿌라, 모니리백양, 모닐리훼라양버들, 모닐리훼라포플라나무라고도 부른다.
