분류체계
길가, 논밭, 습지 등에서 자라는 한해 또는 두해살이풀로 흔히 모여 자란다. 줄기는 곧게 자라며 높이 10~30cm, 밑에서 가지가 갈라지고 어두운 보라색을 띠며 짧은 털이 있다. 잎은 마주나며 3~7갈래 깃꼴로 갈라지고 맨 끝의 갈래잎이 다소 크며 길이 3~15mm, 폭 5~15mm, 털이 있다. 꽃은 4~5월에 흰색으로 피며 줄기 끝에서 총상꽃차례를 이룬다. 꽃받침잎은 4장, 난상 긴 타원형으로 길이 2mm쯤이고, 꽃잎은 4장, 도란형으로 길이 3~4mm다. 수술은 6개이고 이 중 4개가 길다. 암술은 1개다. 열매는 장각과, 선형, 길이 2cm 정도이고, 5월에 익으면 2개의 조각으로 터진다. 우리나라 전역에 자라며, 아시아, 유럽, 북아메리카 등에 분포한다. 이 종과 비교하여 큰황새냉이는 여러해살이풀로 기는줄기가 있고 맨 끝의 갈래잎이 매우 크며, 꽃이 큰 특징 등으로 구분한다. 어린잎과 줄기를 나물로 먹고, 씨를 약재로 쓴다.
