진달래목 진달래과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 높은 산이나 높은 원야에 나는 활엽 떨기나무로 키는 1m 정도이다. 잎은 어긋나며 난형이고 뒷면은 뽀얗고 끝이 둔하며 양면에 털이 없고 가장자리는 밋밋하다. 단지 모양의 녹백색 꽃이 5~7월에 전년도 줄기 끝에 2~3개씩 달린다. 열매는 장과이며 타원형 또는 구형이고 8~9월에 자흑색으로 익는다. 열매는 달고 신맛이 나며 생으로 먹거나 과즙이나 잼을 만든다. 제주도 한라산, 강원도 설악산 이북에 자생하며 북반구 한대 지방에서 분포한다. [저작재산권자]
