쪽동백
산과 들의 숲 가장자리에서 자라는 낙엽 활엽 작은큰키나무로 높이는 10m이다. 가지는 솜털이 있으나 없어지며 윤채가 있는 다갈색으로 된다. 겨울눈은 잎자루 기부로 둘러싸여 있다. 잎은 어긋나고, 타원형 또는 난상 원형, 끝은 급히 뾰족해지며, 밑은 둥글고, 상반부에 잔 톱니가 있으며 흔히 끝이 3개로 갈라지는 듯한 모양으로 표면은 녹색이다. 잎맥 위에 털이 있고 뒷면은 흰빛이 돌며 별 모양 털이 있고 가장자리에 예리한 톱니가 있거나 없다. 꽃은 5~6월에 피고 백색이며 처지고 총상꽃차례는 길이 10~20cm, 작은꽃자루는 길이 8~10mm 털이 있다. 꽃받침은 5~9개로 갈라지고 털이 있다. 꽃부리는 지름 2cm, 5개로 깊게 갈라지고 겉에 별 모양 털이 있으며 수술대와 암술대에 털이 없다. 열매는 삭과, 난상 원형 또는 타원형이고 길이 2cm로서 9~10월에 익으며, 화피가 불규칙하게 갈라진다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 중국 동부, 일본 등에 분포한다. 때죽나무에 비해서 꽃차례는 길이 10~20cm로서 길고, 20여 개의 꽃이 달리므로 구분된다. 반면 쪽동백나무는 때죽나무에 비해 꽃이 달리는 작은꽃자루가 짧다. 관상용으로 심으며, 열매에서 기름을 얻는다.
