장미목 돌나물과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 숲이나 해안 양지바른 곳의 바위 위에 흔하게 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 줄기는 보통 6대 이상 모여나고, 아래쪽이 구부러지며, 붉은색을 띠거나 녹색이다. 높이는 7~25cm다. 잎은 어긋나며, 도란형, 타원형, 주걱형, 길이 2~7cm, 폭 0.5~3.0cm, 끝이 둔하다. 잎 가장자리에 둔하거나 조금 뾰족한 톱니가 있다. 잎자루는 없다. 꽃은 6~9월에 원줄기 끝의 산방상 취산꽃차례에 많이 달리며, 노란색, 4~7수성이거나 2수성이다. 꽃받침은 녹색, 다육질, 피침상 선형이다. 꽃잎은 피침형, 끝이 뾰족하다. 수술은 2줄로 배열되며, 꽃잎과 마주난 것은 꽃잎 밑부분에 붙는다. 꽃밥은 노란색, 세로로 터진다. 열매는 골돌이며, 씨는 갈색이다. 이 종은 줄기는 기부에서 가지가 많이 갈라져 밑에서 비스듬히 자라는 점에서 가는기린초와 구별되며, 길이가 20~50cm인 점에서 대개 20cm 이내인 애기기린초와 구별된다. 변이가 매우 심한 식물이다. 가뭄에 강하고, 바위 등에 붙어 자라는 특성을 이용하여 건물의 지붕이나 옥상에 식물을 자라게 하는 데 유용하게 쓰일 수 있다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 세계적으로 중국 동북부, 일본, 러시아 동북부 등에 분포한다.
