개병풍은 범의귀과 여러해살이풀로 「멸종위기 야생생물 Ⅱ급」식물이다. 국내에 사는 육상식물 중에서 가장 큰 잎을 가지는 희귀식물이다. 깊은 계곡의 응달에서 살며 우리나라 강원도 이북에 자생하며 자생지의 하나인 태백시 금대봉은 자연환경보전법에 의해 생태경관보전지역으로 지정되어 있다. ‘골병풍’으로 부르기도 한다. 무분별한 채취로 인해 위협받고 있으며, 현재 한국적색목록에 멸종위기범주인 취약종(VU)으로 평가되어 있다. [저작재산권자]

전 세계적으로 중국, 러시아에 분포한다. [1]

국내에서는 강원도에 분포하는데, 전 세계적인 개병풍 분포상 남방한계선으로 볼 수 있다. [1]
여러해살이풀로 깊은 계곡 그늘진 곳, 깊은 산 북사면의 비옥한 토양(석회암지대)에서 군집을 이루며 호석회성 식물이다. 일부 저지대 개체군은 풍혈지대에 자생한다. 6~7월경에 개화하여 8~10월에 열매가 익는다. [1]
