공원 및 정원에 관상용으로 식재하는 낙엽성 떨기나무이다. 높이 1~2m, 짧은 가지는 녹색이고, 다 자란 가지에는 털이 없다. 턱잎은 좁은 선형이고, 일찍 떨어진다. 잎은 난형 또는 긴 타원상 난형으로 길이 3~5cm, 폭 2.0~2.5cm, 끝이 길고 뾰족하고, 가장자리는 겹톱니 모양이며, 밑은 둥글다. 잎 앞면은 녹색으로 털이 없고, 뒷면은 연한 녹색으로 잎맥에 잔털이 다소 있다. 잎자루는 길이 3~9mm, 짧고, 털이 없다. 꽃은 4~5월에 피는데 햇가지 끝에 한 개씩 달리고, 지름 2.0~3.5cm, 노란색이다. 꽃자루는 길이 8~12mm, 털이 없다. 꽃받침잎은 난형이고, 양쪽에 털이 없으며, 녹색이다. 꽃잎은 5개, 둥근 난형으로 길이 10~20mm, 폭 10~18mm, 노란색이다. 수술은 많고, 꽃잎 길이의 절반 정도다. 암술은 5~8개, 서로 떨어져 있고, 겉에 털이 있다. 암술대와 수술의 길이는 같다. 열매는 수과, 길이 4~5mm, 8~9월에 익는데 털은 없고, 꽃받침잎이 남아 있다. 우리나라 중부 이남에서 식재하며, 중국 산둥반도 이남, 일본 홋카이도 남부 이남에 분포한다. 우리나라 중부 이남에 자생한다는 기록은 있으나 자생 여부가 불확실하다. 이 종은 꽃잎이 5개인 데 비해 많은 수의 꽃잎이 겹겹으로 되어 있는 죽단화와 구별된다.
