바닷가 근처 낮은 산지나 섬에서 드물게 자라는 낙엽 활엽 떨기나무이다. 줄기는 모여나며, 높이 1.5~2.0m이다. 잎은 마주나며, 난형 또는 긴 난형, 4~10cm이다. 잎끝은 꼬리처럼 길게 뾰족해지고, 밑은 얕은 심장형 또는 둥글며, 잎 가장자리에 날카로운 겹톱니가 촘촘하게 있다. 잎 앞면은 짙은 녹색이고 주름이 지며 뒷면은 연한 녹색으로 털이 있다가 차츰 없어진다. 꽃은 4~5월에 햇가지 끝에 양성화가 1개씩 달리며 흰색이다. 꽃잎은 4개, 길이 1.5~2.5cm이고, 꽃 지름은 3~5cm이다. 열매는 수과이며 길이 7~8mm의 타원형, 9~10월에 검게 익고 윤이 난다. 우리나라 황해도, 경기도, 강원도, 경상북도 등 중부 지역 이남에 나며, 일본 혼슈, 중국 동부~중북부 등에 분포한다. 기온에 대한 적응력이 강해서 널리 심을 수 있으며, 꽃이 아름다워 관상 가치가 높은 생물자원이다. 관상용으로 심는다.
