분류체계
정원에 심어 기르는 낙엽 떨기나무이다. 줄기는 높이 1~2m이며, 가지 끝이 아래로 조금 드리운다. 잎자루는 길이 0.2~1.0cm이다. 잎은 어긋나며, 피침형 또는 긴 타원형으로 길이 2~5cm, 폭 0.6~2.0cm이고, 가장자리는 중앙 이상에 둔한 톱니가 있다. 잎 양면에 털이 없고, 뒷면은 흰빛이 돈다. 꽃은 4~5월에 피는데 가지 끝의 공처럼 생긴 산형 또는 산방꽃차례에 달리며, 지름 0.7~1.0cm, 흰색이다. 작은꽃자루는 길이 1.0~1.5cm이다. 꽃잎은 5장이며, 원형이다. 열매는 골돌이며, 5개, 털이 없다. 중국 원산으로 우리나라 전역에서 식재하며, 중국에서는 산지 사면에 분포한다. 이 종은 산조팝나무에 비해서 중국 원산으로서 심어 기르는 나무이며, 잎은 피침형이므로 구분된다.
