꼬리조팝나무 bookmark_add Spiraea salicifolia L.

강가 또는 계곡의 물이 흐르는 주변 지대, 물기가 많은 초지에 비교적 흔하게 자라는 떨기나무다. 줄기는 모여나며, 높이 1~2m다. 잎은 어긋나며, 피침형, 길이 4~10cm, 폭 1~3cm, 끝이 뾰족하고, 가장자리에 날카로운 톱니 또는 겹톱니가 있다. 잎 앞면은 녹색, 뒷면은 연한 녹색이다. 잎자루는 2~4mm, 털이 없다. 꽃은 6~8월에 피는데 햇가지 끝에서 길이 6~13cm의 원추꽃차례로 달리며, 연한 붉은색, 지름 5~7mm다. 꽃차례와 꽃자루에 털이 많다. 꽃잎은 5장, 둥글다. 수술은 많고, 붉은색, 꽃잎보다 2배쯤 길다. 씨방은 4~7실이다. 열매는 골돌이며, 털이 있다. 우리나라 제주도를 제외한 전역에 나며, 동유럽, 중국, 몽골, 러시아, 캐나다 온타리오, 미국 동부 등에 분포한다. 이 종은 우리나라의 조팝나무속 식물 가운데 꽃은 가장 진한 붉은색이며, 꽃차례는 유일하게 원추꽃차례를 이루므로 구분된다. 관상용, 밀원용으로 심는다. 관상가치가 높고, 유전자원으로서의 가치도 높은 생물자원이다.
