산지에 자라는 낙엽 떨기나무다. 줄기는 곧추서며, 높이 1.0~2.5m, 가지를 치고, 나무껍질에 세로줄과 흰 털이 있다. 잎은 어긋나며, 3개의 작은잎으로 된 겹잎이다. 작은잎은 타원형 또는 도란형으로 길이 2~5cm, 폭 1~3cm, 잎끝은 오목하고, 가장자리는 밋밋하다. 잎 뒷면에 갈색 털이 있다. 잎자루는 길이 2~5cm, 털이 있다. 꽃은 7~9월에 자주색으로 피며, 가지 끝이나 잎겨드랑이에서 총상꽃차례로 달린다. 꽃받침은 종 모양, 4갈래로 갈라진다. 익판은 타원형이고, 밑부분은 귀가 있다. 열매는 협과, 타원형으로 길이 12~15mm, 10월에 익으면 겉에 주름과 부드러운 털이 있다. 우리나라 경상북도에 자생하며, 몽골 남부, 중국, 타이완 등에 분포한다. 싸리나무속 식물에 비해 꽃은 꽃차례 마디에 1개씩 달리고 용골판 끝이 급하게 좁아지므로 구분된다. 붉은꽃싸리라고도 하며, 가축 사료, 밀원식물로 이용한다.
