분류체계
산기슭, 개울가, 풀밭 등에서 자라는 낙엽 떨기나무다. 줄기는 곧추서며, 높이 1.5~2.0m, 나무껍질은 회녹색이다. 잎은 어긋나며, 작은잎 10~20장으로 된 깃꼴겹잎이다. 턱잎은 바늘 모양으로 길이 1.5~5.0mm다. 작은잎은 타원형 또는 난형으로 길이 3~10mm, 폭 2~8mm, 밑부분은 쐐기 모양, 끝은 둔하거나 잘린 모양, 가장자리는 밋밋하다. 꽃은 5월에 노란색으로 피며, 잎겨드랑이에 1~2개씩 달린다. 꽃자루는 길이 1cm쯤이다. 꽃받침은 종 모양, 겉에 짧고 부드러운 털이 있다. 꽃부리는 길이 2.5cm쯤이고, 기판은 익판보다 짧다. 열매는 협과, 원통형으로 길이 2~5cm, 털이 없고, 9월에 익으면 2갈래로 갈라진다. 한반도 북부지방에 자생하며, 러시아 극동, 몽골, 중국 등에 분포한다. 이 종에 비해 골담초는 작은잎이 10~20개로 많고, 길이는 1cm 미만으로 작으므로 다르다. 관상용으로 심고, 뿌리, 줄기, 가지를 고혈압, 위장병 등에 약용한다. 북골참초라고도 한다.
