조각나무
조각나무
중국 원산이며 마을 근처에 드물게 식재하는 낙엽 큰키나무다. 줄기는 곧추서며, 높이 20~30m, 방추형의 큰 가시가 있다. 잎은 어긋나며, 작은잎 6~16장으로 된 깃꼴겹잎이다. 작은잎은 긴 타원형 또는 난형으로 길이 2~8cm, 폭 1~4cm, 밑부분은 쐐기 모양, 끝은 둔하거나 약간 뾰족하고, 가장자리에 톱니가 있다. 잎 양면 잎맥에 갈색 털이 있다. 꽃은 5~6월에 암수한그루에 피는데 연한 노란색이고, 가지 끝이나 잎겨드랑이에서 총상꽃차례로 달린다. 수꽃은 지름 9~10mm, 수술은 6~8개, 퇴화한 암술은 길이 2.5mm쯤이다. 양성꽃은 지름 10~12mm, 꽃잎과 꽃받침은 수꽃보다 크며, 수술은 9개, 암술머리는 2갈래다. 열매는 협과, 갈색 또는 붉은 갈색, 납작하며, 길이 12~37cm, 폭 2~4cm, 구부러지고, 10월에 익으면 흰색 가루가 덮인다. 씨는 갈색, 윤이 나며, 타원형으로 길이 12mm, 폭 8mm쯤이다. 우리나라 전역에서 드물게 식재하며, 중국에 분포한다. 주엽나무에 비해 가시가 원주형으로 크며, 잎 가장자리에 얕은 톱니가 빽빽하게 있고, 씨방 밑부분에 부드러운 털이 있으며, 열매가 두껍고 비틀리지 않으며 구부러지므로 구분된다. 열매와 가시를 약용한다. 참조각자나무라고도 한다.
