분류체계
콩목 콩과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 유럽 원산이며 목초용으로 도입하여 재배하던 것이 야생화하여 햇볕이 잘 드는 풀밭에 자라는 여러해살이풀로 귀화식물이다. 초본으로 전체에 털이 다소 있고 곧추자라 30~60cm에 이르며 가지가 갈라진다. 잎은 어긋나며 엽병이 길고, 소엽은 3개로 난형 또는 긴타원형에 둔두 또는 약간 요두이고 둔저 또는 원저이며 길이 3~5cm이다. 잎 표면에는 흰 무늬가 있고 가장자리에 잔 톱니가 있다. 탁엽은 난형을 끝이 길게 뾰족해진다. 꽃은 6~7월에 자줏빛 또는 홍자색으로 엽액에 둥글게 모여 달리고 꽃받침은 통형이다. 열매는 협과로 8~9월에 익는다. 이 종은 꽃이 줄기 끝부분의 잎겨드랑이에서 자루가 거의 없는 머리모양꽃차례에 모여 피는 점에서 꽃차례의 자루가 긴 토끼풀과 구별된다. 또한 잎몸이 손바닥 모양의 3개의 작은잎으로 구성되는 점에서 5개 이상의 작은잎으로 구성된 달구지풀과 구별된다. 목초로 재배한다. 유럽 원산으로 우리나라 전역 및 전 세계에 분포한다.
