콩목 콩과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 정원수로 널리 심고 있는 낙엽 덩굴식물로, 다른 물체를 오른쪽으로 감아 올라가면서 자라며, 어린 가지에는 밤색 또는 회색의 얇은 막이 있다. 잎은 엇갈려 달리는데, 작은 잎 13~19장으로 이루어진 겹잎이며, 작은 잎은 난상 타원형 또는 장타원형으로 길이 4~8cm이며, 작은 잎 끝은 뾰족해지고, 아래쪽은 둥글고, 가장자리는 밋밋하다. 작은 잎자루는 길이 4~5mm 정도이며, 잔털이 있다. 꽃은 4~5월에 연한 자주색으로 피고, 가지 끝에 총상화서에 달리며, 화서축에는 백색의 잔털이 빽빽하다. 열매는 길이 10~20cm 정도의 콩꼬투리로 맺히며, 열매 겉에는 잔털이 있고, 종자는 갈자색으로, 겨울철에 열매가 폭발하듯이 터지면서 종자가 산포된다. 전국에 나며, 일본에 분포한다.
