분류체계
연못에 자라는 여러해살이풀로 수생식물이다. 줄기는 높이 50cm 정도로 밑부분은 진흙 속으로 들어가 땅속줄기가 되며 위쪽 끝이 물 위에 뜬다. 잎은 줄기의 마디마다 4장씩 돌려나며, 깃털 모양으로 깊게 갈라진다. 잎자루는 없다. 물속의 갈래잎은 매우 가늘며, 갈색이 도는 녹색이다. 공기 중의 갈래잎은 넓고 짧으며 흰빛이 도는 녹색이다. 꽃은 8월에 암수한포기에 피며, 연한 노란색으로 물위로 나온 잎겨드랑이에 1개씩 달리는데 줄기 윗부분에는 수꽃이, 아랫부분에는 암꽃이 달린다. 수꽃은 꽃잎 4장, 수술 8개이며, 암꽃은 끝이 4개로 갈라진다. 우리나라 황해도, 경기도, 경상남도, 전라남도 등에 나며, 북반구 온대 지역에 분포한다. 꽃이 잎겨드랑이에 하나만 달리는 특징으로 이삭물수세미나 선물수세미와 구분할 수 있다. 연못이나 수조에 관상용으로 심는다.
