경상남도 거제도 옥녀봉, 전라남도 백양산 숲속에 자라는 낙엽 떨기나무다. 줄기는 높이 3m 정도, 어린 가지에 짧은 털이 있다. 잎은 어긋나며, 3~5갈래로 깊게 갈라진다. 잎 뒷면에 백록색 잔털이 있다. 꽃은 5~7월에 노란빛이 도는 흰색으로 피며, 잎겨드랑이에서 나온 꽃대에 2~3개가 모여 달리며 취산꽃차례를 이룬다. 꽃받침통은 도란형, 끝은 일자 모양이다. 꽃잎은 5개, 털이 없고 뒤로 말린다. 열매는 핵과, 타원상 원형이다. 일본, 중국, 대만에 분포한다. [저작재산권자]
