분류체계
산지 계곡 비탈에서 자라는 낙엽 떨기나무 또는 작은큰키나무이다. 잎은 마주나며 길이 3~8cm이다. 잎몸은 난형, 난상 긴 타원형 또는 도란형이고, 잎끝은 점차 뾰족해지거나 뾰족하며, 밑은 둥글거나 넓게 뾰족하다. 잎 양면에 털이 거의 없다. 잎 가장자리에는 안으로 굽은 뾰족한 톱니가 있다. 꽃은 5~6월에 피는데 잎겨드랑이에서 나오는 꽃자루가 긴 취산꽃차례에 1개 또는 여러 개의 꽃이 달린다. 꽃은 지름 8~9mm로서 가장자리가 연한 녹색이며 내부는 자갈색이다. 꽃받침, 꽃잎 및 수술이 각 5개이며 중앙부에 1개의 암술이 있다. 열매는 삭과로 지름 1cm 정도, 둥글며, 마르면 5개의 능선이 약간 나타난다. 9~10월에 암적색으로 익으면 5개로 갈라져 종자가 들어 있는 적색 종의(種衣)가 보이게 된다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 일본, 중국 동북부 해안, 러시아 사할린 등에 분포한다. 이 종은 꽃이 5수성이며, 열매에 날개가 전혀 발달하지 않고 5갈래로 갈라지므로 국내 유사종과 구별된다. 관상용으로 심으며, 나무껍질은 끈 대용으로 이용한다.
