분류체계
대극목 대극과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 열대 아시아 및 아프리카 원산이며 약용으로 또는 기름을 짜기 위해 재배하던 것이 야생화하여 들판, 길가에서 자라는 한해살이풀이다. 원산지에서는 여러해살이풀이다. 줄기는 가지가 갈라지며, 높이 100~200cm이다. 잎자루는 20~40cm이다. 잎은 어긋나며, 5~11갈래로 갈라져서 손바닥 모양 또는 방패 모양처럼 되며, 지름 30~60cm이고 가장자리에 날카로운 톱니가 있다. 꽃은 8~10월에 암수한포기로 피며 줄기 끝에서 난 길이 15~25cm의 총상꽃차례에 달린다. 수꽃은 꽃차례 아래쪽에 달리고, 연한 노란색이며, 화피는 5갈래로 갈라지고, 수술대가 가늘게 갈라진다. 암꽃은 꽃차례 위쪽에 달리고, 연한 붉은색이며, 화피가 5갈래로 갈라지고, 암술은 1개, 암술대가 3개이다. 열매는 삭과이며, 타원형이고, 지름 1.5~2.0cm, 겉에 가시가 있으며, 9~11월에 익으며 씨가 3개 들어 있다. 씨는 타원형, 길이 1.2~1.7cm, 갈색 반점이 있고 밋밋하다. 우리나라에서 볼 수 있는 대극과 식물들에 비해서 잎은 손바닥 모양으로 갈라지며, 잎자루는 방패 모양으로 붙으므로 구분된다. 종자는 약용 또는 기름을 짜며, 잎은 식용으로 이용한다. 아주까리라고도 한다. 우리나라 각지에서 재배하거나 자생하며, 열대 아시아, 아프리카 등에 분포한다.
