분류체계
갈매나무목 갈매나무과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 산지 숲속에 자라는 낙엽 떨기나무이다. 줄기는 높이 4~8m, 가지 끝이 가시로 변하고, 껍질은 회색이 도는 갈색이다. 잎은 마주나거나 조금 어긋나며, 긴 타원형 또는 타원상 도란형, 길이 4~10cm, 폭 3~5cm이다. 잎밑은 쐐기 모양, 가장자리에 둔한 잔 톱니가 있다. 잎 뒷면은 회색이 돈다. 잎자루는 0.5~2.5cm이다. 꽃은 5~6월에 암수딴그루로 피며, 잎겨드랑이에서 1~2개씩 달리고, 노란빛이 도는 녹색이다. 꽃잎과 꽃받침잎은 각각 4장씩이다. 수꽃에 퇴화한 암술이 있다. 암꽃에는 꽃밥이 없는 수술이 있다. 열매는 핵과, 둥글고, 지름 6~8mm, 9~10월에 검게 익는다. 씨는 1~2개씩 들어 있고, 뒤쪽에 홈이 진다. 중부 이북에 분포하는 돌갈매나무는 잎이 길이 1~4cm로서 작으며, 씨는 아래쪽에 둥근 구멍이 있으므로 다르다. 나무껍질은 염료로 쓰며, 열매는 약용한다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 중국에 분포한다.
