분류체계
높지 않은 산지의 숲 가장자리, 경사 지대, 산골짝에 자라는 낙엽 떨기나무이다. 줄기는 높이 3~5m이다. 잎은 마주나며, 작은잎 3장으로 된 겹잎이다. 작은잎은 타원형 또는 난상 타원형이며, 길이 4~8cm, 폭 2~5cm이다. 잎 가장자리에는 뾰족한 잔 톱니가 있다. 꽃은 5~6월에 피는데 길이 5~8cm의 원추꽃차례에 달리며, 흰색이다. 꽃잎은 도란상 긴 타원형이다. 암술은 1개, 암술머리는 끝이 2갈래로 갈라진다. 열매는 삭과이며, 부푼 반원형, 9~10월에 익는다. 열매가 발달함에 따라 풍선처럼 부풀어 위쪽이 2조각으로 갈라진다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 세계적으로는 중국과 일본 등에 분포한다. 고추나무는 잎은 마주나며, 잎몸은 3개의 작은잎으로 구성되어 있는 점에서 1회 깃꼴로 갈려 여러 쌍의 작은 겹잎을 갖는 말오줌때와 구별된다. 잎이 고춧잎을 닮아서 우리말 이름이 붙여졌다.
