해안 근처의 산지에 자라는 상록성 떨기나무로 높이는 4m에 이른다. 잔가지에는 털이 없으며 턱잎이 변한 편평한 가시가 있다. 잎은 어긋나고, 3~7개의 작은잎으로 된 깃꼴겹잎이다. 작은잎은 난형 또는 난상 피침형이며 잎끝은 점차 뾰족해지고 밑은 뾰족하다. 작은잎의 길이는 3~12cm, 폭은 1.0~2.5cm이고 맨 위쪽 작은잎이 가장 크다. 표면에는 털이 없고, 뒷면 기부에 융털이 있거나 없으며 가장자리에 투명한 샘점과 잔 톱니가 있다. 잎자루와 엽축에 넓은 날개가 있다. 꽃은 암수딴그루로 5~6월에 연한 황색으로 피며 잎겨드랑이에 총상 또는 겹총상꽃차례로 달린다. 열매는 삭과로 8~9월에 익으며, 종자는 흑색이다. 우리나라 강원도 삼척, 경상남·북도, 전라남·북도에 나며, 중국, 일본, 타이완, 동남아시아, 인도, 부탄 등에 분포한다. 산초나무에 비해 잎이 상록성이며 잎자루와 엽축에 날개가 있는 것으로 구별된다.
