높은 산 숲속에 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 뿌리줄기는 옆으로 뻗는다. 잎은 뿌리에서 3~5장이 나며, 작은잎 3장으로 된 겹잎이다. 작은잎은 잎자루가 없고, 심장형, 길이 4~20mm, 폭 7~30cm이다. 꽃은 5~6월에 뿌리에서 난 길이 5~15cm의 꽃줄기 끝에 1개씩 피며, 흰색 또는 드물게 자주색, 지름 1.5~2.5cm이다. 꽃받침잎은 5장이며, 좁은 난형이다. 꽃잎은 5장이며, 흰 바탕에 연한 자줏빛이 돈다. 수술은 10개, 암술은 1개이다. 열매는 삭과, 길이 8~10mm이다. 우리나라 전역에 자생하며, 러시아 동부, 일본, 중국, 북아프리카, 북미, 유럽 등에 분포한다. 큰괭이밥에 비해서 전체가 작으며, 고산지역에서 자라고, 작은잎은 거꾸로 된 심장형으로 끝은 심장 모양이므로 구분된다. 산괭이밥이라고도 부른다.
