숲의 가장자리, 초지 또는 잡초로 우거진 곳에 나는 여러해살이풀로 키는 30~80cm 정도 자란다. 줄기는 보통 1개이나 간혹 2~3개씩 달리기도 하는데 옆으로 기면서 자라며, 아래를 향한 털들이 달린다. 잎은 서로 마주 보며 달리는데, 신장형의 5각형이며, 3~5갈래로 깊게 갈라진다. 잎자루는 줄기 위쪽으로 갈수록 짧아지며, 잔털이 있다. 꽃은 6~8월경에 연한 홍색 또는 홍자색 또는 거의 흰색으로 1개씩 피나 드물게 2개씩 달리기도 한다. 꽃받침잎과 꽃잎은 5장이며, 길이는 4~6mm 정도로 비슷하다. 꽃잎은 도란형인데, 끝은 조금 오목하며, 털이 드물게 달린다. 열매는 삭과로 9월경에 성숙하며, 조그만 털로 덮여 있다. 우리나라 지리산 이북의 산지에 나며, 호주, 캐나다, 미국, 중국, 인도, 일본, 몽골, 파키스탄, 러시아 등에 분포한다. 이질풀은 꽃과 열매가 2개씩 달리며, 종자는 타원형이고 샘털이 존재하며, 줄기는 옆을 향하는 반면, 쥐손이풀은 꽃과 열매가 1개이며, 종자는 장타원형이고, 샘털이 없어 구분되며, 또한 줄기에는 아래쪽을 향한 털이 있으며, 잎이 깊게 갈라져 구분된다. 전초를 약용한다. 긴꽃쥐손이풀, 손잎풀이라고도 한다.
