산과 들의 숲 가장자리에서 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 뿌리는 몇 갈래로 갈라진다. 줄기는 아래쪽이 옆으로 눕고, 마디가 굵으며, 높이 30~80cm, 구부러진 털이 많다. 잎은 마주나며, 5갈래로 갈라지는 아래쪽 잎을 제외한 잎은 3갈래로 깊게 갈라지고, 길이와 폭이 5~10cm, 가장자리에 불규칙한 톱니가 있다. 잎 앞면과 뒷면 잎맥 위에 구부러진 털이 있다. 턱잎은 막질, 길이 2~5mm, 서로 떨어져 있다. 꽃은 8~10월에 잎겨드랑이에서 난 꽃대에 2개씩 피며, 연한 붉은색, 지름 1~1.5cm이다. 꽃받침잎은 길이 6~8mm, 짧은 털이 난다. 꽃잎은 5장, 붉은 줄이 있다. 열매는 삭과, 9~10월에 익는데 길이 2cm쯤, 5갈래로 갈라진다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 일본, 중국 등에 분포한다. 이질풀에 비해서 잎은 3갈래로 크게 갈라지며, 전체에 샘털이 없으므로 구분된다. 또한 턱잎은 각각 떨어져 있기 때문에 둥근이질풀을 비롯하여 기부가 합쳐진 종들과 구별된다. 꽃은 잎겨드랑이에서 2개씩 붙는 점에서 쥐손이풀과 구별된다.
