할련
쥐손이풀목 한련과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 남아메리카 안데스 지역 원산이며 관상용으로 민가와 식물원에서 흔히 심어 기르는 덩굴성 한해살이풀이다. 식물원 주변의 빈터나 습지, 강가에서 야생으로 자라기도 한다. 줄기는 길이 1.5m 정도이고, 2.5m까지 자라기도 하며, 털이 있거나 없다. 잎은 어긋나며, 길이 5~25cm의 잎자루 끝에 둥근 방패 모양으로 달린다. 잎자루 끝에서 약 9개의 잎맥이 방사상으로 퍼지며, 잎의 지름은 3~12cm이다. 꽃은 6~10월에 피는데 노란색, 주황색, 붉은색, 보라색 등으로 다양하며, 잎겨드랑이에서 나온 꽃자루에 1개씩 달린다. 꽃받침잎은 5장이고 밑부분이 합쳐진다. 꽃잎은 5장으로 아래쪽의 3장은 가장자리에 털 같은 돌기가 있으며, 위쪽의 2장은 돌기가 없다. 열매는 편평한 구형이고 지름 1.5~2.0cm, 7~10월에 익는다. 잎은 후추 맛이 있어서 샐러드나 샌드위치에 넣어 먹고, 꽃은 음식 장식용으로 쓴다. 또한 상처 치료와 비뇨기, 호흡기의 질환에 약용으로 쓴다. 할련이라고도 부른다. 우리나라 각지에서 식재한다. 세계적으로 남아메리카 볼리비아, 콜롬비아, 페루에 분포한다. 하와이와 뉴질랜드 등지에는 귀화식물로 정착하였다.
