Aralia japonica Thunb.
미나리목 두릅나무과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 바다 근처 숲에서 드물게 자생하거나 인가 주변에 식재하는 상록 떨기나무이다. 줄기는 밑에서 몇 대가 모여나며 높이 2~3m이다. 잎은 줄기 끝에 모여서 어긋나며, 7~9갈래로 가운데까지 갈라져 손바닥 모양이고, 지름 20~40cm, 밑이 심장형, 가장자리에 톱니가 있다. 잎 앞면은 짙은 녹색, 윤기가 있고, 뒷면은 노란빛이 도는 녹색이다. 잎자루는 15~45cm이다. 꽃은 10~12월에 가지 끝에서 산형꽃차례가 모여서 된 원추꽃차례에 피며, 흰색이다. 꽃자루는 8~10mm이다. 꽃받침잎은 뚜렷하지 않다. 꽃잎은 5장이다. 수술은 5개, 암술대는 4~6개이다. 열매는 장과, 둥글고, 지름 약 5mm, 이듬해 3~5월에 검게 익는다. 통탈목에 비해서 전체가 조금 작으며, 잎 앞면은 더욱 짙은 녹색으로 윤이 나고, 잎자루는 속이 비지 않으므로 구분된다. 관상용으로 식재하며, 약용한다. 팔손이나무라고도 부른다. 우리나라 전라남도 광도, 경상남도 비진도, 제주도 등에 자생하며, 일본 남부에도 분포한다.
