Hydrocotyle asiatica L.
섬의 산, 들에 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 원줄기는 옆으로 뻗고 뿌리가 내리는 마디 근처에 2개의 퇴화된 비늘 모양의 잎이 있다. 잎은 단엽이고 마디에서 밀생하며 원형 또는 콩팥 모양이며 지름 2~5cm이고 표면은 광택이 나며 가장자리에 둔한 톱니가 있고, 잎자루의 길이는 4~20cm이다. 꽃은 7~8월에 피는데 홍자색이고 잎겨드랑이에 보통 3~4송이씩 산형꽃차례로 달리며 머리 모양이다. 꽃자루는 짧다. 모인꽃싸개잎은 2개이고 꽃차례를 둘러싸며 난형이고 오래 달려 있다. 암술대는 2갈래이다. 열매는 분과이고 둥글고 납작하다. 우리나라 경상남도, 전라남도, 제주도 등에 나며, 중국 남부, 동남아시아 등에 분포한다. 이 종은 잎이 단엽이고 원형 또는 콩팥 모양이며, 단순한 산형꽃차례에 꽃이 달리므로 피막이 종류와 유사하나 잎이 더 둥글고 갈라지지 않으며, 홍자색의 꽃이 피고, 열매에 그물처럼 생긴 능각이 있는 특징으로 뚜렷이 구분된다. 전초를 약재로 사용한다. 말굽풀, 조개풀이라고도 한다.
