분류체계
산기슭의 그늘지고 습한 곳, 냇가와 습지 등에서 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 줄기는 곧추서고 높이 30~60cm, 윤기가 나고 둥글며 속은 비었고 겉은 연보라색을 띤다. 잎은 어긋나며, 3개의 작은잎으로 된다. 잎몸은 심장형 또는 넓은 난형, 길이 2~14cm, 폭 3~17cm이다. 잎자루는 길이 5~20cm이다. 줄기 아래쪽에 달리는 잎의 잎자루는 밑부분이 넓어져서 줄기집으로 된다. 가운데 작은잎은 마름모꼴 삼각형 또는 마름모꼴 넓은 난형, 길이 3~8cm, 폭 2~6cm, 끝이 날카롭고 아래는 급하게 뾰족하며 가장자리는 불규칙한 이중 톱니가 있다. 꽃은 7~8월에 피는데 줄기 끝이나 잎겨드랑이에서 나온 겹산형꽃차례에 달린다. 꽃잎은 흰색, 도란형이고 끝부분은 안으로 말린다. 열매는 분과, 긴 타원형, 단면은 5각형, 8~9월에 익는데 2갈래로 갈라진다. 우리나라 전역에 자생하며, 독특한 향기가 있어서 방향성 채소로 재배하기도 한다. 세계적으로 일본, 중국 등에 분포한다. 이 종은 꽃자루의 길이가 일정하지 않아 꽃차례가 불규칙하게 벌어지는 것이 특징이다. 어린잎을 식용, 뿌리와 줄기를 약용한다. 반디나물, 참나물이라고도 한다.
