습기가 많은 경사지, 습지 근처, 밭 등에서 자라는 상록 여러해살이풀이다. 전체가 녹색이며 원줄기가 지상으로 뻗으면서 마디에서 뿌리가 내리고 가지 끝이 굵으며 땅속에서 월동하고 가지가 서지 않는다. 잎은 단엽이며 원형이고 지름 5~20mm로서 5~7개로 중앙까지 갈라지며 가장자리에 톱니가 있고, 잎자루는 길이 7~20mm이며, 턱잎은 지름 1.2mm 정도로서 얇은 막질이다. 꽃은 7~8월에 피는데 흰색 또는 녹색이며, 잎겨드랑이에 나는 산형꽃차례에 달리고, 꽃차례자루는 잎자루와 길이가 거의 비슷하다. 꽃잎은 5개이고 난형이며 수술도 5개로서 짧고 씨방은 하위이며 녹색이다. 열매는 분과, 극히 짧은 대가 있고 편구형이며 2~4개씩 달리지만 때로는 10개까지 달리는 것도 있다. 8~9월에 익는다. 우리나라 제주도에 자생하며, 중국 남부, 동남아시아 등에 분포한다. 이 종은 산형꽃차례가 뿌리에서 발달하는 특징으로 제주피막이와 유사하나, 식물체가 상록성이고, 잎자루가 기부를 제외하면 털이 없는 특징으로 구분할 수 있다. 지혈제의 약재로 쓴다. 피마기풀, 피막이풀이라고도 한다.
