분류체계
북아메리카 원산의 귀화식물로 밭이나 길가, 들판의 황무지, 민가 주변 등에 흩어져 자라는 한해살이풀이다. 줄기는 곧추서고 높이 20~90cm이며, 털이 없다. 잎은 어긋나며, 난형 또는 긴 타원형으로 길이 2~4cm, 폭 1.0~2.5cm이다. 잎끝은 약간 뾰족하며, 밑부분은 쐐기 모양으로 좁아지며, 가장자리는 물결 모양이거나 약간의 톱니가 있다. 잎자루는 길이 7~15mm이다. 꽃은 6~10월에 마디와 마디 사이에 2~4개가 산형꽃차례를 이루어 옆으로 달린다. 꽃의 지름은 4~5mm, 흰색이다. 꽃받침은 5갈래로 갈라지며, 갈래조각은 긴 타원형으로 끝이 뾰족하다. 수술대와 암술대는 털이 있으며, 꽃밥은 길이 1.5mm이다. 열매는 10월에 익으며, 둥글고 지름 5~8mm, 광택이 있고, 아래를 향해 매달린다. 북미 원산으로 우리나라 전역에 분포한다. 까마중은 꽃이 짧은 총상꽃차례로 달리므로 구분된다. 어린잎은 식용하며, 독성이 있지만 열매는 약용한다.
