저지대 들판, 경작지를 비롯한 황무지 및 풀밭에서 흔하게 자라는 덩굴성 여러해살이풀이다. 땅속줄기는 가늘고, 흰색이다. 줄기는 덩굴지며 다른 물체를 감고, 아래쪽에서 가지가 갈라지며, 길이 30~100cm이다. 잎은 어긋나며, 난형 또는 긴 난형, 4~6cm, 폭 3~6cm, 밑이 심장형 또는 원형, 가장자리가 3~7개로 크게 갈라진다. 꽃은 6~8월에 잎겨드랑이에서 난 긴 꽃자루에 1개씩 피며, 연한 붉은색 또는 흰색, 깔때기 모양, 지름 2~3cm이다. 꽃자루 위쪽에 좁은 날개가 있다. 꽃싸개잎은 2장, 삼각상 난형, 길이 1~2cm, 꽃받침보다 길다. 꽃받침은 5갈래다. 꽃부리는 길이 3~4cm이다. 수술은 5개, 꽃부리 길이의 절반 정도이다. 암술대는 수술대보다 길다. 열매는 삭과, 둥글고, 지름 8~10mm이며, 8~9월에 익는다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 인도, 일본, 중국; 동남아시아 등에 분포한다. 메꽃에 비해서 전체가 작고, 꽃은 흰색에 가까우며, 꽃자루는 위쪽에 좁은 날개가 있으므로 구분된다. 뿌리를 식용, 약용한다. 좀메꽃이라고도 한다.
