Elsholtzia pseudocristata var. splendens Kitag.

숲 가장자리와 햇빛이 잘 드는 곳에서 무리 지어 자라는 한해살이풀이다. 줄기는 곧추서며, 가지가 갈라지고, 높이 30~60cm다. 잎은 마주나며, 난형 또는 좁은 타원형, 길이 4~8cm, 폭 3~5cm, 가장자리에 이 모양 톱니가 있다. 잎자루는 1.5~3.0cm다. 꽃은 9~10월에 줄기와 가지 끝에서 이삭꽃차례로 달리며, 분홍빛이 도는 자주색이다. 꽃차례는 길이 4~10cm, 폭 0.5~1.0cm다. 꽃싸개잎은 둥근 난형, 끝이 뾰족하며, 자주색, 가장자리에 털이 난다. 꽃받침은 종 모양, 5갈래로 갈라진다. 꽃부리는 입술 모양, 윗입술은 끝이 오목하고 아랫입술은 3갈래로 갈라진다. 수술은 4개, 2개가 꽃부리 밖으로 길게 나온다. 열매는 소견과다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 중국 동북부 지역에도 분포한다. 향유와 형태적으로 유사하나 향유에 비해서 꽃차례는 길이와 폭이 모두 크며, 꽃 색깔은 더욱 진하고 화려하므로 구분된다. 전초는 약용하며, 향료로 이용한다. 원예종으로 개발할 가치가 있다.
