분류체계
양지바른 숲의 가장자리, 길가, 밭에 자라는 두해살이풀이다. 줄기는 밑에서 많이 갈라지며, 높이 10~30cm, 자줏빛이 돈다. 잎은 마주나며, 아래쪽의 것은 원형으로 지름 1~2cm, 잎자루가 길다. 위쪽 잎은 잎자루가 없고 반원형, 양쪽에서 줄기를 완전히 둘러싼다. 꽃은 3~5월에 잎겨드랑이에서 여러 개가 피며, 붉은 보라색이다. 보통 이른 봄에 꽃이 피지만 남부지방에서는 겨울철인 11~2월에도 꽃을 볼 수 있다. 꽃부리는 길이 1.5~2.0cm이며, 통이 길고, 위쪽에서 갈라지며, 아랫입술은 3갈래로 갈라진다. 열매는 소견과이며, 난형이다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 중국, 일본, 러시아, 동남아시아, 서아시아, 유럽, 북아메리카 등에 분포한다. 광대나물에 비해 광대수염류는 잎몸이 피침형에서부터 난형으로 모두 잎자루가 있으며, 줄기를 싸지 않는 점에서 쉽게 구별된다. 어린 식물체는 나물로 먹기도 하고, 민간에서는 지혈제로 쓰인다.
