높은 산의 습한 풀밭에 드물게 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 줄기는 곧추서며, 가지가 갈라지지 않고, 높이 1~1.5m, 털이 난다. 잎은 마디마다 3~9개씩 돌려나며, 긴 타원형 또는 넓은 선형, 길이 10~15cm, 폭 2~5cm, 끝이 매우 뾰족하고, 가장자리에 뾰족한 톱니가 있다. 꽃은 6~8월에 길이 20~35cm의 이삭꽃차례에 빽빽이 달리며, 붉은 보라색 또는 보라색으로 핀다. 꽃받침은 4개로 갈라지며, 갈래는 길이가 다르다. 꽃부리는 통 부분이 길이 5~7mm로서 길고, 끝이 4개로 얕게 갈라지는데 갈래는 길이 1~2mm이다. 수술은 2개이다. 수술대와 암술대는 꽃부리 밖으로 나온다. 열매는 삭과, 난형 또는 긴 타원형, 길이 4~5mm, 8~9월에 익는다. 제주도를 제외한 우리나라 전역에 나며, 러시아 극동부, 일본, 중국 동북부 등에 분포한다. 꼬리풀속 식물들에 비해서 잎은 돌려나며, 꽃부리는 잔 모양이 아니라 통 모양으로 끝만 얕게 4갈래로 갈라지므로 구분된다. 관상 및 약용 가치가 높은 생물자원이다. 숨위나물, 시베리아냉초라고도 한다.
