Valeriana villosa Thunb.
산토끼목 마타리과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 전체에 흰색 털이 있으며 높이 1m 정도로 자란다. 밑에서 뻗는 가지가 지하 또는 지상으로 자라면서 번식한다. 잎은 어긋나며, 단순하거나 깃털모양으로 갈라진다. 잎 길이는 3~15cm 정도이며 양면에 흰색 털이 있고, 표면은 짙은 녹색, 뒷면은 흰빛, 가장자리에 톱니가 있다. 줄기 밑부분에 달리는 잎은 잎자루가 있으나 위로 올라가면서 없어진다. 꽃은 7~8월에 흰색으로 피는데 가지 끝과 원줄기 끝에 산방상으로 달린다. 꽃차례가 갈라지는 곳에는 원줄기의 아래쪽과 더불어 퍼진 또는 밑을 향한 흰색 털이 난다. 꽃부리는 지름 4mm이고 5개로 갈라지며 통부가 짧고 4개의 수술과 1개의 암술이 있다. 열매는 건과로 거꿀달걀모양이다. 산야의 양지에 나는 여러해살이풀이다. 꽃은 가지 끝부분에서 산방꽃차례에 흰색으로 피는 점에서 노란색인 속 내 다른 종들과 구별된다. 열매는 거꿀달걀모양으로 주변에 둥글고 큰 날개가 있는 점에서 날개가 없는 마타리와 구별된다. 우리나라 전역에 나며 일본, 타이완, 만주, 중국에 분포한다.
