산기슭, 길가에 자라는 여러해살이풀로 북아메리카 원산의 귀화식물이다. 줄기는 높이 30~130cm, 윗부분에 털이 있다. 잎은 마주나며, 잎몸은 난형, 길이 2~10cm, 폭 1.5~6.0cm, 끝은 점점 뾰족해지며 밑은 둥글거나 쐐기 모양, 가장자리에 뾰족한 톱니가 있다. 잎자루는 길이 2~6cm다. 머리모양꽃은 8~10월에 피는데 15~25개의 관모양꽃으로 이루어지며, 줄기와 가지 끝에서 산방꽃차례로 달린다. 관모양꽃은 흰색, 끝이 5갈래로 갈라진다. 모인꽃싸개잎은 원통형, 모인꽃싸개잎 조각은 10개 내외로 1줄로 붙는다. 열매는 수과, 길이 약 2mm, 4~5개의 능선이 있고 검은색, 광택이 있다. 북아메리카 원산이며, 우리나라 서울 남산, 북한산 등 전 지역, 경기도 일대 성남, 광주, 하남 등 중부지역에 분포한다. 등골나물에 비해 크기가 작고, 줄기 위쪽에 달린 잎의 잎자루가 길며, 모인꽃싸개잎 조각이 1줄로 배열하므로 구분된다. 어린잎을 식용한다.
