분류체계
열대 아메리카 원산이며 화단, 정원에 관상용으로 심어 기르거나 길가, 풀밭에서 자생하는 한해살이풀이다. 줄기는 곧게 서며, 중간 또는 아래쪽에서 가지가 갈라지고 높이 30~70cm, 전체에 털이 많다. 잎은 마주나거나 어긋난다. 잎몸은 심장형 또는 난형, 길이 2~6cm, 폭 1.5~3.5cm, 끝이 둔하거나 뾰족하고 가장자리는 톱니 모양이다. 잎맥은 3~5맥이다. 잎자루는 길이 0.7~3cm다. 꽃은 6~10월에 자주색 또는 흰색으로 피며, 머리모양꽃이 산방꽃차례를 이룬다. 머리모양꽃은 지름 1cm쯤, 관모양꽃만 있다. 모인꽃싸개 조각은 선상 피침형, 끝은 뾰족하며 털이 빽빽하게 난다. 열매는 수과, 길이 1.5~1.7mm, 검은색이다. 우산털은 5개다. 등골나물아재비에 비해 옆으로 퍼져 자라고, 잎몸이 심장형에 가까워 길이와 폭이 비슷하거나 길이가 약간 길어 구분된다. 우리나라 각지에서 식재하거나 귀화하여 분포한다. 원산지는 중앙아메리카와 멕시코 인접 지역으로 멕시코엉겅퀴로도 불리며, 원산지에서는 잡초로 취급한다. 관상용으로 심는다. 전초를 약용할 수 있다.
