분류체계
유럽 및 서아시아 원산이며 들판, 절개지 사면 등에 자라는 두해살이풀로 귀화식물이다. 줄기는 곧게 서며, 높이 1m 정도로 2m까지 자라고 날카로운 톱니가 발달한 날개가 있으나 위쪽에는 흔적만 있다. 잎은 어긋나며 긴 타원형에서 피침형으로 길이 4~12cm, 가장자리는 깃꼴로 갈라지고 가장자리 끝은 가시처럼 되고 밑부분은 잎자루 없이 감싸며 흘러내린다. 꽃은 7~8월에 피는데 가지 끝에 지름 3~4cm인 머리모양꽃이 1개씩 달리고, 보통 아래를 향한다. 모인꽃싸개 조각은 피침형, 길이 1~2cm, 폭 2~5mm, 여러 줄로 붙어 머리모양꽃차례를 완전히 감싼다. 관모양꽃만 있으며 자주색, 길이 15~25mm다. 열매는 수과, 회갈색, 길이 3.5mm쯤이다. 우산털은 은갈색, 길이 1~2cm다. 우리나라 중부지방 서울, 남양주, 양평 등에 나며, 러시아, 몽골, 중국 신장, 카자흐스탄, 북아프리카, 서남아시아, 유럽 등에 분포한다. 지느러미엉겅퀴에 비해 머리모양꽃이 줄기나 가지 끝에 1개씩 달리고, 지름이 3~4cm로 2배 이상 크고 아래로 처지므로 구분된다. 관상용으로 심고, 약용 또는 식용한다.
