분류체계
국화목 국화과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 줄기는 높이가 1.5m~2m이고 윗부분에서 가지가 갈라지며 털이 없다. 잎은 마주나고 2회 깃꼴로 갈라지며, 갈라진 조각은 줄 모양이다. 꽃은 6~10월에 피고 가지와 줄기 끝에 지름 6cm 정도의 머리모양꽃이 1개씩 달린다. 머리모양꽃은 6~8개의 혀모양꽃과 황색의 통모양꽃으로 구성된다. 혀모양꽃은 색깔이 연분홍색, 흰색, 붉은색 등 매우 다양하고 꽃잎의 끝은 톱니 모양으로 얕게 갈라지며, 관모양꽃은 꽃밥이 짙은 갈색이고 열매를 맺는다. 모인꽃싸개잎 조각은 2줄로 배열하고 달걀 모양의 피침형이며 끝이 뾰족하다. 열매는 수과이고 10월에 여물며, 털이 없고 끝이 부리 모양 돌기가 있다. 멕시코 원산의 귀화식물, 관상용으로 흔히 심고, 일부는 야생화하여 도로변, 공터 등에서 자라는 한해살이풀이다. 우리나라 전역에 분포하고, 냉온대~난온대 지역에 귀화하여 분포한다.
