아프리카가 원산인 귀화식물이며 주로 바닷가에서 자라는 한해살이풀이다. 키는 50~100cm이고, 직립하며, 식물체 전체에 간혹 털이 있다. 잎은 어긋나며, 줄기 중앙부 윗부분의 것들은 타원형이고, 줄기 아랫부분의 잎들은 깃털 모양으로 잘게 갈라져 길이 10~20cm, 너비 5~10cm이다. 잎의 가장자리는 불규칙적으로 크기가 다른 톱니가 나 있으며, 잎자루는 4cm 정도다. 머리모양꽃차례인 머리모양꽃은 9~10월에 피는데 취산형으로 배열되고, 고개를 숙이는 모양으로 밑을 향해 자라다가 직립한다. 머리모양꽃의 지름은 약 4mm쯤이다. 모인꽃싸개는 원통형이며 길이 1.5~2cm이고, 바깥 열의 모인꽃싸개잎 조각은 길이 1mm쯤, 안쪽 열의 모인꽃싸개잎 조각은 16개쯤이고 길이 8~10mm이다. 꽃은 붉은색이다. 열매는 수과이며, 길이 2mm이고, 우산털은 길이 8~10mm이다. 우리나라 제주도와 부산, 울산, 돌산도 등지의 남부지방 바닷가에서 퍼져 나가며, 아프리카에 분포한다. 붉은서나물과 비슷하지만, 식물체의 크기가 작고 머리모양꽃이 모두 아래로 향해 달리며, 통모양꽃이 적색인 점에서 뚜렷이 구분된다.
