들판, 인위적인 간섭이 다소 심한 곳과 논둑 등 다소 습한 풀밭에 흔하게 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 기는줄기가 발달하여 사방으로 퍼지며, 마디에서 뿌리가 내린다. 뿌리잎은 도피침형 또는 주걱상 타원형, 길이 10~20cm, 폭 1.5~3cm, 가장자리는 밋밋하거나 중앙 이하에 톱니가 있다. 꽃은 4~7월에 꽃줄기 끝에 머리모양꽃이 1~6개 달리며, 노란색이다. 꽃줄기는 높이 10~30cm, 잎이 없거나 1장이 달린다. 머리모양꽃은 지름 2.5~3cm이다. 모인꽃싸개잎은 통 모양, 길이 1.2cm쯤이다. 안쪽 모인꽃싸개잎 조각은 9~10개이고 바깥쪽 모인꽃싸개잎 조각은 안쪽보다 1/3 정도로 짧다. 열매는 수과, 7월에 익으며, 길이 7~8mm, 깊은 홈이 있고, 우산털은 흰색이다. 우리나라 전역에 자생하며, 일본, 중국, 타이완에 분포한다. 좀씀바귀에 비해서 전체가 크며, 잎은 도피침형으로서 길고, 모인꽃싸개잎과 수과는 더욱 길므로 구분된다. 뿌리와 어린순을 식용한다. 뻗을씀바귀, 큰덩굴씀바귀라고도 부른다.
