깊은 산 습지에 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 뿌리줄기는 짧고 굵으며 수염뿌리가 많다. 줄기는 곧추서며 높이 40~100cm, 가지가 갈라지지 않고 털이 없다. 뿌리잎은 2~3개가 모여나며, 잎자루는 길이 20~75cm다. 잎몸은 심장 모양, 드물게 화살 모양이며 길이 10~20cm, 폭 10~30cm, 끝은 갑자기 뾰족해지고, 가장자리에 뾰족한 톱니가 있으며, 양면에 털이 없다. 줄기잎은 잎자루가 짧거나 없으며 잎몸은 뿌리잎과 비슷한 모양으로 보다 작다. 꽃은 8~9월에 노란색 머리모양꽃으로 피며, 줄기 끝에서 총상꽃차례를 이룬다. 모인꽃싸개는 종 모양, 길이 8~12mm, 조각은 보통 5개로 1줄로 붙는다. 열매는 수과, 도피침형, 길이 5~7mm다. 우산털은 흰색, 연한 노란색, 드물게 갈색이다. 우리나라 북부지방 및 전라남도 흑산도 일대에 나며, 일본과 중국에도 분포한다. 이 종은 곰취에 비해 총포조각이 5개, 혀모양꽃이 1~3개로 적으므로 구분된다. 어린잎은 식용하고 뿌리는 부인병 치료에 쓴다.
