분류체계
산기슭이나 바닷가 풀밭에 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 뿌리줄기는 기둥 모양으로 굵으며 지름 1.5cm쯤이다. 줄기는 곧게 자라며 높이 1.2m에 이르고 위쪽에서 가지가 갈라지기도 하며 전체가 흰 털로 덮여 있다. 뿌리잎은 꽃이 필 때 떨어지거나 남아 있다. 줄기잎은 어긋나고 선상 피침형으로 길이 7~35cm, 폭 5~15mm로 가장자리는 밋밋하고 양면에 흰 털이 있으나 없어진다. 머리모양꽃은 5~8월에 피는데 줄기와 가지 끝에 달리며 연한 노란색이다. 모인꽃싸개는 원통 모양으로 길이 2.5~3.0cm, 폭 8~15mm, 처음에는 거미줄 같은 털이 있다. 모인꽃싸개 조각은 5~7줄로 붙으며 바깥조각이 가장 짧다. 열매는 수과로 9~10월에 익는데 길이 16~20mm이다. 우산털은 볏짚색으로 길이 2.5cm쯤이다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 몽골, 러시아, 중국 동북부 등에 분포한다. 이 종과 비교하여 멱쇠채는 줄기에 달리는 잎은 모두 비늘조각 모양의 잎이며 가지가 갈라지지 않고, 귀화식물인 쇠채아재비는 머리모양꽃 아래의 꽃자루가 넓적하고 모인꽃싸개 조각이 한 줄로 붙으므로 구분된다. 어린잎을 식용한다. 미역꽃이라고도 한다.
