햇볕이 잘 드는 길가, 풀밭 등 저지대에 흔하게 자라는 한해 또는 두해살이풀이다. 전체에 잔털이 난다. 줄기는 곧추서며, 높이 15~100cm다. 뿌리잎은 도피침형으로 길이 8~25cm, 폭 2~6cm이며, 깃꼴로 갈라지는데 끝의 갈래가 가장 크다. 줄기잎은 어긋나며, 2~3장이다. 잎몸과 잎자루에 긴 샘털이 있다. 꽃은 머리모양꽃차례로 5~10월에 피며, 노란색이다. 머리모양꽃은 산방상 원추꽃차례를 이루며, 혀모양꽃으로만 이루어지고, 지름 7~8mm다. 모인꽃싸개잎은 좁은 원주형으로 길이 4~5mm다. 꽃부리는 길이 5~11mm, 혀 부분이 짧다. 열매는 수과이며, 긴 난형으로 길이 1.8mm쯤이고, 세로로 난 능선이 10~13개 있다. 우산털은 흰색이며, 가시털 모양이다. 우리나라 전역에 분포한다. 뽀리뱅이속 식물들은 아시아 지역에만 자생하였는데 인간의 활동에 의해 지금은 전 세계로 퍼져서 자란다. 자화수분을 하는 특징이 있다. 어린잎은 나물로 먹으며, 전초를 약재로 쓴다.
