자라풀목 자라풀과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 줄기는 옆으로 뻗으면서 뿌리를 내리고, 흰색 또는 녹색이다. 잎은 어긋나지만, 응축되어 모여나는 것처럼 보인다. 잎자루는 없다. 잎몸은 선형, 길이 30~80cm, 폭 3~10mm, 가장자리는 밋밋하거나 뚜렷하지 않은 톱니가 있다. 수꽃은 200여 개가 막질의 포에 싸여 있다가 포가 터지면 물 위로 올라온다. 꽃은 7~9월에 암수딴포기에 핀다. 수꽃은 지름 1mm 정도, 꽃받침잎은 3장, 꽃잎은 흔적으로 남아 있고, 수술은 2개가 부분적으로 융합되어 1개처럼 보인다. 암꽃은 막질의 포에 싸여 있으며 꽃줄기 끝에 1개씩 달린다. 꽃줄기는 나선형으로 꼬인다. 물에 의해 꽃가루가 운반되어 수분이 이루어진다. 열매는 육질이고 원주형이다. 9~10월에 익으며, 씨는 갈색이고 방추형으로 겉은 밋밋하다. 강, 저수지, 하천 등에 여러해살이풀로 자라는 침수성 수생식물이다. 관상 및 수질을 정화하는 데 이용한다. 우리나라 전역에 나며 일본, 중국에 분포한다.
