석호, 염전 수로 등 민물과 해수가 섞이는 곳에 사는 여러해살이풀로 침수성 수생식물이다. 땅속줄기의 마디에서 줄기가 나오며, 길이는 최대 80cm에 이른다. 줄기는 많이 갈라진다. 잎몸은 선형, 길이 3~10cm, 폭 0.5mm, 잎끝은 뾰족하고 가장자리는 밋밋하다. 잎자루는 잎집으로 된다. 꽃은 6~7월에 피는데 잎겨드랑이에서 우산꽃차례에 3~7개가 달린다. 화피는 없고 수술은 2개, 심피는 4개이다. 열매가 성숙할 때 꽃자루가 길어지고 굽는다. 열매는 수과, 난형으로 지름 2~3mm, 끝에 짧은 부리가 있다. 우리나라 전국의 해안에 자생하며, 전 세계 아한대, 온대 및 열대에 분포한다. 바다말이라고도 부른다.
